New Year, New You, New Habits. Be Better. Live Better.
The tagline, “New Year, New Me,” can be found across billboards, in marketing campaigns and is commonly said by our friends as the holiday season rolls around. We set ambitious goals but fail to stick to them after a few short weeks. This year, we are changing that.
Humans are creatures of habit, which means that the longer we have had a habit, the deeper ingrained it is in us and the harder it is to give up. Habits are “a settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard to give up.” For a habit to be executed, there are three elements required: a cue, a response and a reward. The cue could be a craving for a glass of wine, the response would be pouring one and the reward would be the calming effects and satisfaction of drinking it.
This year, instead of choosing specific goals, we want you to choose “theme-based goals.” For example, “I want to improve my health and vitality.” Using an umbrella term will free you from thinking that you are tethered to one single goal/action or feeling like having to give up a habit entirely, and instead will broaden the goal to affect your daily actions. Instead of cutting out a habit, we can simply replace it with a healthier option, such as drinking an Ener-C Multivitamin packet mixed with water instead of wine. The habit remains in place, the contents have been upgraded and there is no resistance because you didn’t have to sacrifice the action that you associate with winding down – drinking a beverage.
Taking one goal and turning it into a health theme, will evoke a ripple-like response in all of your actions following. For the first year ever, this will truly be a new you.
