Title: Letter from CEO

Playgrounds are full again. And beach fire pit parties have resumed. College, high school, and kids’ sports teams are back on the field practicing and competing – stadiums are full and people are celebrating wins and lamenting losses. Communities of like mindedness are coming together to play, eat, share, and grow. This makes us so happy to see because Mother’s has always been inspired and energized by the new connections we make in the communities we serve.

Mother’s Market was founded on being the community gathering place where like-minded people could go and connect and celebrate their healthy lifestyle. We continue to be that place and have some amazing new connection points and events in our stores. We are so excited to share them with you!

This spring, we are bringing back some of your favorites: demos, NEW product introductions, more local partnerships, and wellness seminars and events. We look forward to you joining us and inviting your friends to come too. When you come for our demo days, also grab a juice from the juice bar, chat with our Wellness Experts about the latest and greatest in supplements, and enjoy a healthy bite to eat in our cafes. Even better, we welcome you to plan your next book club, girl’s night, or bible study at Mother’s. Just reach out to us and let us know and we will accommodate your needs!

We’ve been part of the community for 44 years and look forward to continuing to provide a place Where Healthy Meets Lifestyle™.

Cheers,

Dorothy Carlow

Mother’s Market CEO

Title: California Love | Local Farm & Family Producers

For over 40 years, Mother’s is proud to provide the widest selection of organic produce in Southern California. Thanks to the outstanding local farms, local partners, and family producers, we are able to bring the best to you. Here we share our gratitude to some of our suppliers this season.

Armstrong Growers

For over 30 years, Armstrong Growers has been growing certified organic produce, herbs, and plants by collaborating with plant breeders worldwide and creating a strong root system ensuring strong, bright blooms. Each greenhouse is designed to assure maximum sun exposure and airflow to every plant. Then they are taken outdoors to finish and fully acclimate so they stay well-toned throughout the season. By performing green practices such as recycling water, composting, and looking out for bees, Armstrong Growers continues to protect the environment and grow communities for years to come. Armstrong Growers is supplying Mother’s with certified organic vegetables and herbs that are packed with flavor and color making any meal look and taste delicious. In addition, they’re providing beautiful organic greenery that can grow perfectly in the home or outside in the garden making any space a perfect green haven.

Revol Greens

With food safety as their top priority, the Revol Greens team secures and protects their greenhouses from animals and contaminants while avoiding the use of pesticides. Fresh greens are grown inside, saving land space. By growing more with less, Revol Greens uses 90% less water than traditional farming and reuses as much as possible, saving over 500 million gallons of water each year. In addition, they partner with Plant Fed Organic to create a clean and safe fertilizer alternative that is 100% plant-based. With locations in California, Minnesota, and soon Texas, Revol Greens has grown into the largest greenhouse lettuce producer in the US. This spring, Revol Greens is providing Mother’s with their USDA Certified Organic Salads and Kits. From hearty greens, such as Arugula, to crunchy greens, such as Romaine, each line of greens has something for everyone to enjoy.

Title: Seasonal Favorite | Tips for Cooking Organic Asparagus

If you’re looking for a new meal prep idea or planning the next family barbeque, try adding asparagus to our grocery list. It is asparagus season after all! This beautiful springtime vegetable has an adaptable flavor that tastes great in a variety of cooking methods. A bonus is that they are rich in antioxidants and potassium, giving you energy! Whether you’re a beginner at cooking veggies or an asparagus expert, here are some useful tips for cooking this vegetable.

One

When choosing your asparagus, look for purple, dark green tips and stems that are firm and rounded. Make sure to look out for those dried ends because dried ends mean less flavor.

Two

Know what type of asparagus you want before cooking! Different types of vegetables mean different styles of cooking. The three kinds of asparagus are green, purple, and white. Green asparagus can be cooked in a variety of ways. Purple asparagus has a fruitier taste that only requires light cooking while white asparagus is tougher and more bitter, meaning it needs to be peeled and cooked longer.

Three

If you want to serve your cooked asparagus as soon as it’s ready, try cutting off any hard ends or flaky tips. You’ll save time cooking and cleaning.

Four

Try to prevent overcooking by placing your cooked asparagus in an ice bath. The cold water will stop the cooking process plus your asparagus will keep its crunchy texture. No more soggy veggies!

Title: Committed to Sustainability | Brands Giving Back to Mother Earth

When it comes to helping the environment, the smallest act can make the biggest impact. At Mother’s, we are always exploring new ways to better Earth and we’re honored to work with brands that prioritize improving the environment. Supporting these brands means taking a step toward a healthier future for the planet we call home. For those who want to learn more about giving back to Earth, we’ve listed a few brands we offer that dedicate their time to bettering our world.

Trinity Oaks

Trinity Oaks is a brand that not only recycles but plants one tree for every bottle of wine sold. Since July 2008, Trinity Oaks has planted over 28 million trees, giving us more oxygen and less water pollution. For sale materials, the brand uses 100% recycled post-consumer waste and recycles all packaging and shipping materials. Trinity Oaks continues to stay green and find new ways to waste less.

Natural Factors

Since the 1950s, Natural Factors has produced organic nutritional products fertilized by compost and avoids the use of pesticides and harsh chemicals. That way our air stays clean! Every year, the brand partners with Plant a Seed & See What Grows Foundation, an organization whose goal is to create a healthier planet for generations to come, and grow our relationship with the land around us. With every bottle of Whole Earth and Sea sold, $2 is donated to this organization that celebrates the power of giving, respect, and integrity.

Seventh Generation

Seventh Generation is an eco-friendly brand of cleaning and personal care products. The brand advocates for sustainability and zero waste with every product made. Each recycled package contains a plant-based product with sustainably- sourced ingredients. The brand has various commitments they strive to achieve by 2025, such as using 100% bio-based ingredients and reducing greenhouse gasses, so our environment stays healthy for the next seven generations.

Stasher

Stasher is a reusable bag brand that makes bags out of silicone, making them a great alternative to single-use plastic bags. Because most recycling companies don’t accept silicone, Stasher partners with TerraCycle to recycle any damaged bags into new products such as playgrounds or track surfaces. Now that’s recycling! With each bag sold, 1% of sales gets donated to nonprofits fighting to keep the planet clean and safe.

Title: Entertaining Idea | How to Build A Crudité Board

Similar to charcuterie boards, crudité boards have grown in popularity in restaurants and homes as a fun, healthy starter. They give you the opportunity to get your daily source of veggies in and are great for those who prefer a lighter appetizer. Crudité in French is defined as “rawness” and was first featured in 20th century France and was later added to cookbooks in 1965. The original recipe included raw vegetables such as asparagus, carrots, celery, green onions, tiny artichokes, and turnips. Now there are hundreds of ways to make a personalized crudité board with your favorite vegetables on a beautiful display. It’s the perfect finger food to have at any gathering or party and takes very little time to make! Don’t know where to start with your crudité board?

Check out this guide to help you get started!

RAW VEGETABLES

Raw vegetables provide a great crunch and are very nutritious. For raw veggies, some of our suggestions include:

• Organic baby carrots

• Organic green onion

• Organic snap peas

• Organic cucumber

• Organic mini bell peppers

• Organic broccoli

ROASTED VEGETABLES

Vegetables can be tasty raw, but if you want to spice it up, try roasting them in the oven! That way you get extra flavor and a variety of textures. For roasted vegetables, consider these options:

• Organic asparagus

• Organic zucchini

• Organic cauliflower

• Organic green beans

DIPS

What better way to enjoy eating vegetables than by adding some delicious dips! Mother’s offers a great variety of hummuses, dips, and dressings that would go perfectly with the items above. For dips, some great choices include:

• Mother’s Homemade Grab & Go Vegan Ranch

• This Dip Is Nuts! Buffalo Dip

• Cedar’s Vegan Garlic Hummus

• Cedar’s Cucumber Garlic Tzatziki

CHEESES

Vegetables may not be everyone’s favorite snack.

A great way to make eating veggies easier is by adding your favorite cheese to the mix. If you choose this option, try pairing your crudité board with:

• Galbani Fresh Mozzarella Ovoline

• Rumiano Sharp Cheddar Cheese

• Boursin Garlic and Fine Herbs Gournay Cheese

Whether you’re trying to add more veggies to your diet or want your family to start a new tradition, you can find all of your crudité needs at Mother’s.

Title: Must Know | Tips for Washing Organic Produce

It’s super important to wash fruits and vegetables properly before eating them. Yes, even if organic you should still wash them! This will help with removing dirt as well as any bacteria that may be on the produce. Here are a couple of ways to keep your produce clean and safe to eat.

Wash Just Before You Eat

While tempting to wash your fresh produce just after you bring it home, it’s better to wait to wash it until just before you are about to eat it. This helps preserve its nutrients.

Create Your Own Wash

Vinegar is a perfect natural disinfectant. All you need to do is mix equal parts vinegar and water in a large bowl then throw in your favorite fruits and veggies. Wait a few minutes, then rinse and dry!

Purchase Pre-made Sprays

If you don’t want to make any DIY fruit and veggie wash at home, many stores (including Mothers!) have great pre-made sprays ready to use on any produce items of your choice! All there is left to do is spray, rinse, and dry.

Dry Produce with a Clean Cloth or Paper Towel

While it’s best to wash produce just before you eat it, if you are washing in advance, make sure to properly dry it with a clean cloth or paper towel. Any moisture left can lead to bacteria growth.

Title: The Organic Difference | Why Shop Organic Produce?

Mother’s is proud to offer the widest selection of fresh, organic produce in Southern California. But what does organic mean? And why should we shop for organic fruits and vegetables? There are more reasons than you may think!

What’s the Difference?

The difference between organic and conventional produce has to do with how food is produced. Organic means the produce is grown without any human-made pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. Pesticides are substances used to destroy unwanted insects while herbicides are synthetic substances used to manipulate the process of plant growth. Although these substances may sound beneficial, they can do more harm than good to our bodies and the environment! In shorter terms, organic produce is fresh and naturally grown.

Cleaner Food Means A Cleaner Diet

Organic produce is free of artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. By avoiding these synthetic substances, you may have a lower chance of developing various common health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. Organic crops also have higher antioxidant levels, which protect your body’s cells from unwanted illness! Other properties such as vitamins and micronutrients can also be found in non-synthetic produce. Vitamins support growth and development, while micronutrients support us through our daily activities.

Protects Animals

Organic crops are pollinator-friendly, meaning the bees can stay healthy! Not only are we keeping them happy, but also organic farming provides healthy seeds for birds with no GMOs or pesticides. It’s common for conventional farmers to spray pesticides on their crops to kill off insects, however toxic runoff is a common issue, making the surrounding soil toxic for other bugs and small mammals. By purchasing organic produce, you’re helping the animal ecosystem.

Better For The Climate and Environment

Which state has the most certified organic farms? California of course! Certified organic farms are great for the environment because organic fruits and vegetables take 45% less energy to produce compared to conventional production. These farms are also great at taking advantage of composting which enriches the soil. Thanks to crop rotation, this specific kind of farming uses 40% less greenhouse gases. And organic agriculture supports biodiversity, meaning that by choosing organic, you are choosing to help the planet as well!

Clean Water

Organic producers use natural methods, such as crop rotation, to make soil fertility better. Natural practices like this can make a huge impact because they protect groundwater supplies and steer clear of runoff that causes “dead zones” in rivers, lakes, and oceans. Dead zones refer to areas of water where aquatic life can’t survive due to low oxygen levels.

Taste

Organic produce has great taste! Thanks to strong nourishment, all you taste is pure goodness leaving out any unnatural substances! Even various food experts and chefs agree that the high nutritional content brings out the optimal flavor!

Title: Mother’s Day Gifts | Wine Guide for Mom
