LETTER FROM THE CEO
This summer, Mother’s Market & Kitchen opened its 10th store at Peter’s Landing in Sunset Beach. This new store is the first smaller concept store for our company – it is small but mighty. We aimed to build a neighborhood marketplace where our customers can find everything they need for their weekly food shop. It has become a community gathering place where neighbors can gather on the harbor for a juice and healthy veggie & rice bowl. We believe it’s a place where healthy meets convenience, and our selection of organic and natural foods complements an active and vibrant California lifestyle. It’s super exciting to see our children going back to school. As we praise our kids’ return; we also celebrate a return to being able to gather with friends and are grateful to the many service people who allowed this to happen, especially essential workers. This Fall, let’s give thanks for the small things like pencils, apples, and being able to have juice with a friend. With thanks, Dorothy Carlow Mother’s Market & Kitchen CEO

LOCAL FARMS & FAMILY PRODUCERS
With the widest selection of organic produce in Southern California for over 40 years, Mother’s is your organic produce destination. Bringing Orange County and Los Angeles residents the best organic fruits and vegetables does not just happen. Through years of vetting, forming, and maintaining relationships with local farms and family producers, we are able to bring you the best of the best. With Fall in mind, we wanted to share some of the most popular seasonal produce items and introduce you to some of our amazing partners that supply us and ultimately you, with them.
Frog Hollow Farms.
Since 1989, Frog Hollow Farms has been committed to regenerative agriculture, bringing high-quality, fresh, organic produce to people with the least impact on our land. Located in Brentwood-CA, the 260-acre farm grows organic fruits and produces smallbatch gourmet foods. Some of its offerings include peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums, and pluots. The company is certified organic and committed to sustainable practices, both in how it grows the produce and in how it treats its workers. While many farms rely primarily on seasonal hires, Frog Hollow Farms provides year-round employment for many local residents in order to properly tend to its trees. Frog Hollow Farms is sourcing Mother’s with its Warren Pear this fall. This variety has a classic European texture — soft and juicy with a melting mouthful. In addition, it is sweet to taste and avoids the typical grittiness found in most other pear varieties. Warrens are harvested in late August and are available until late December or early January while supplies last.
Moonland produce.
With roots deep within the agricultural industry for over 40 years, Moonland Produce’s facility and sales are run by two generations of produce enthusiasts. The company is known for its California Sweet Dragon, a variety of dragon fruit, which is a family built effort of two families working together to offer the highest quality dragon fruit. Gray and McIan Martin are a father-son duo that are the reason why this Dragon Fruit variety is the sweetest. Together they work day and night on the ranch’s 100 acres to cultivate the sweetest dragon fruit you’ll ever taste. The second family operates a wholesale produce company located in Vernon, CA, the hub of produce distribution in Los Angeles. California Sweet Dragon is shipped from Temecula directly to Vernon where it is packed, stored, and distributed, exclusively by Moonland Produce. This fall, Moonland Produce is supplying Mother’s with beautiful California Sweet Dragon, which are one of a kind, self-fertile, and ultra sweet hybrid varieties of magenta and white flesh Dragon Fruits, founded by Gray Martin. Grown under the sunny skies of Southern California, this superfood is rich in antioxidants, protein, fiber, and vitamin C.
Sustainable and eco-friendly SCHOOL LUNCHBOX ESSENTIALS
If you’re looking for ways to make your little ones’ back-to-school days more sustainable and environmentally friendly, lunchtime is the best place to start! While it may be hard to keep things eco-positive when buying from the school cafeteria, you have a lot more control when you bring a lunch from home. Here are a few ways to help the students in your family protect the Earth each day at school.
Try a reusable lunchbox, such as Love Bags, instead of paper bags or worse, plastic ones! Love Bags are made from recycled plastic bottles and can be easily washed by wiping them down or tossing them on a gentle machine cycle. It doesn’t get much easier than that!
Using a reusable water bottle, such as Frank Green or Hydro Flask, is another great idea. Doing so cuts down on the number of plastic bottles deposited into landfills and oceans and is much handier for keeping drinks cold. Fill up the reusable bottle with any drink your child likes, and it’ll stay warm or cold all day. Not to mention, they’re fun to decorate with stickers.
What better way to cut out plastic bags than filling up Stasher bags with snacks or other meal items? Stasher bags are easily washable and reusable. They also come in a variety of sizes, making them perfect for any lunch item you need.
Who can forget the other lunchtime necessity: the utensils. It’s all too easy to grab a pack of disposable plastic cutlery, but it’s even easier to have a reusable fork and spoon set. Most reusable cutlery sets come with a handy travel case or baggy, making it easier than ever to carry your necessities with you

Falling leaves & staying green TIPS TO STAY GREEN THIS FALL
As the heat of summer dies down and gives way to a new cycle of nature’s regeneration, we can use Fall as the perfect time to think more about our impact on the world’s environment. In what ways can you do better for the rest of this year and in years going forward? Take inspiration from these tips to help lighten your family’s impact on the Earth.
Buy Seasonal Produce. Research what’s in season and pick it up during your next trip to Mother’s! Local and seasonal items use far fewer resources.
Start Composting. It happens to all of us: food waste and excess cooking waste. But instead of just tossing these in the trash, it’s just as easy to throw your food waste into a compost bin— after you get it set up, of course. But the time put in is worth it. You save more waste from a landfill and get healthy soil in return!
Reuse Jars and Bottles. These are perfect to use as food storage rather than plastic containers. You can also use them as household items such as pencil holders, flower vases, and small containers.
Drive Less. Walk and Bike More. As the weather cools down, you can take advantage of it by traveling to your errands or work on foot or by bike, if and when you are able. But if you do need to drive, consider doing all your errands in one go rather than multiple trips and try carpooling when you can.
At home activity, colorful fruit skewers.
As you gear up to send your little ones back to school, you may be thinking about ways you can bring their school lessons home and continue the learning. This can go much further than helping them out with homework assignments or art projects. Here’s a fun activity you can do in the form of a tasty and healthy after-school snack! Grab some wooden kabob skewers and any variety of fruits that your kids love. Cut up the fruits into bite-size pieces, and then have the kids join you in pushing the fruit bites onto the skewers. With each piece, have them tell you the fruit’s color and shape. Come up with fun color and shape patterns to learn all about the fruits your kids love. And if you want to make things even easier and skip the cutting, Mother’s Grab and Go Sliced Fruit is a perfect item to pick up during your regular grocery shopping trip. Who knew learning could be so sweet?
Seasonal bucket list 8 FUN ACTIVITIES TO DO THIS FALL Perhaps Southern California doesn’t see too much of the classic autumn staples like orange and red trees or cooler weather, but there are still many things you can do to enjoy the season! Here are eight fun ideas for you to tackle this fall to capture the perfect autumnal mood.
1. Go apple picking. There are plenty of places you can go to do this! Many of the orchards that offer apple picking are located in Lancaster or Yucaipa, but the trek is worth it once apple season hits.
2. Marathon your favorite Halloween movies. Get a group together and have each person pick a movie. Then get everyone cozy and enjoy an array of treats while watching the movies. Tip: Mother’s offers yummy Grab & Go Desserts that are great for the occasion!
3. Make an autumn playlist. There’s nothing better for getting into the autumn mood than having the right vibe in your commute music!
4. Have a fall picnic with friends. Make it a potluck too. Get outdoors and enjoy the company of loved ones.
5. Try some new seasonal food recipes. They could even be for dishes for your picnic. Try out a seasonal ingredient you’ve never cooked before. Maybe you’ll find your next favorite dish.
6. Have a bonfire gathering on the beach. There are several places you can do this, so make sure you read up on the rules of your beach of choice! Get friends together for a cozy night under blankets, roast hot dogs and marshmallows near the sea.
7. Visit a pumpkin patch. This seems like a no-brainer, but there’s something very special about walking through rows of pumpkins looking for just the right one. If you pick the right patch, you may even get access to a hayride or apple cider!
8. Go on a hike. Autumn is the perfect time to enjoy the beauty of nature. Get out there and take it slow on one of our beautiful local trails or nature reserves. If you’re feeling artsy, you can even bring a small sketchbook and draw your favorite plants.

Twist on a Fall classic
VEGAN CARAMEL APPLE RECIPE
Caramel apples are the classic Fall treat. Try this recipe for vegan caramel apples that puts a plant-based twist on a timeless favorite! The sweet crunch of the apple pairs so perfectly with the smooth, creamy caramel that it’s like they are made for each other. Plus, making caramel apples is a fun activity you can do with the whole family. Dip them, decorate them, and then have fun trying to eat them without getting too messy.
INGREDIENTS:
• Whole organic green apples, as many as you want
• Popsicle sticks
• 1 tbsp vinegar
• 1 1⁄4 cup brown sugar
• 1⁄2 cup corn syrup
• 1⁄2 cup vegan butter

• 1 tsp sea salt
2 tsp vanilla extract
• Your toppings of choice- dipping or drizzling chocolate, candies, nuts, etc.

the popsicle sticks into the apples and place Them in the freezer.
2. Stir together all other ingredients in a saucepan over medium-low heat until sugar and butter dissolved. Stir continuously until it comes to a boil, then allowed to boil until it reaches 245 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove from heat and let sit for 5 minutes.
3. Dip apples into the cooled caramel and swirl to coat evenly. Hold inverted for 10 seconds, then place on a rack over a cookie sheet to rest.
4. Allow to cool in the fridge for 10 minutes. 5. Decorate with your desired toppings.
Hearty & seasonal
ACORN SQUASH BOWLS
Acorn squash is often forgotten in favor of its more popular cousin, the butternut squash, but this small and admittedly pretty squash has a lot of flavor power! It can be pureed and added to soups or chopped up and roasted as a side dish. But the acorn squash makes a perfect main dish as well. Why not branch out a bit this autumn and try a tasty roasted acorn squash stuffed with a healthy medley of quinoa and veggies?
INGREDIENTS:
• 2 organic acorn squash • Olive oil
• 1⁄2 cup dry quinoa
• 1 cup vegetable broth
• 1⁄4 cup dried cranberries
• 1 small organic onion
• 1⁄4 cup pepitas
• 1⁄2 cup diced cremini mushrooms • 1⁄4 cup chopped parsley
• 3 cloves minced garlic
• 1 tbsp lemon juice
• 1 cup vegan parmesan cheese • 1 tsp sage
• 1 tsp thyme
• 1⁄2 tsp cinnamon
• Salt and pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet. 2. Slice the squash in half and scoop out the seeds and
stringy guts.
3. Place squash on baking sheets, cut side up, drizzle with salt and olive oil, and rub it in, so the surface is coated.
4. Roast for 30-45 minutes, cut sides down.
5. In a saucepan, combine vegetable broth and quinoa, bring to a boil, then simmer uncovered for 12-18 minutes or until liquid is absorbed—fluff with a fork.
6. In a skillet, sauté the onion, mushrooms, pepitas, garlic, and seasonings. Then add them to a bowl
with the quinoa, cranberries, parsley, lemon juice, and cheese. Mix well.
7. Spoon into the holes of the squash, then return to the oven for 15-18 minutes. Enjoy!

Must-know tips
PUMPKIN SEED ROASTING
Have you ever tried roasting pumpkin seeds after carving a beautiful pumpkin, only to end up with bitter, burnt seeds? It can be incredibly discouraging and feel like such a waste. But there’s actually more to roasting perfect pumpkin seeds than just tossing them in the oven. Here are some tips to guide you to a perfect batch!
1. Yes, you have to clean them very thoroughly. Make sure there’s no pumpkin guts or slime left. It’ll prevent the shell from cooking properly because the inside cooks a lot faster than the outside!
2. Boil them in salted water. Doing so makes the seeds more digestible and makes the shell nice and crispy upon baking. No one likes chewy pumpkin seeds!
3. Let them dry overnight. It’s no fun having to wait, sure, but it’s worth it. The water contained in the seeds from boiling and washing will make them more difficult to roast. Spread them out on a counter, then dress and bake in the morning.
4. Be sure to stir them around at least twice while baking. This way, they don’t burn on one side, and they get nicely browned all over. About 10 minutes in the oven at 400°F is usually enough, and don’t forget to season them with oil and your spices of choice!
Vegan, dairy-free, & gluten-free
PUMPKIN CHILI RECIPE
There are few better foods for autumn than a warm, hearty bowl of chili. It’s a highly customizable dish that is very hard to mess up and can be as mild or spicy as you like it. So what better way to celebrate the Fall season than with the quintessential autumn food: pumpkin! It’s no wonder pumpkin reigns king of Fall produce because it fits in with countless different recipes, sweet or savory. Here is a delicious vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free pumpkin recipe that’ll make anyone happy.
INGREDIENTS:
• 1 lb Beyond Burger Ground Vegan Beef • 1 diced organic green pepper
• 1 diced organic onion
• 1 can unseasoned pumpkin puree
• 2 cans beans of your choice
(pick 2 different ones- not drained!)
• 1 can roasted diced tomatoes • Olive oil
• 1 tbsp honey
• 4 minced garlic cloves
• 1 tbsp cumin
• 1 1⁄2 tbsp chili powder • 1 tsp onion powder
• 1 tsp garlic powder
• Salt and pepper
DIRECTIONS:
1. In a large pot, brown the Beyond Burger ‘beef’ with olive oil, green pepper, and onion.
2. Add the garlic, seasonings, and honey, then mix well.
3. Once the meat is mostly browned, add the tomatoes, beans, and pumpkin puree.
4. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Enjoy with cornbread!
What ’s the difference
PUMPKIN PIE PUMPKINS V. CARVING PUMPKINS
While pumpkin pie pumpkins and carving pumpkins may look similar, the truth is that they are very different! There’s a good reason for each name and why we use one for eating and the other for decoration.
On the outside, pumpkin pie pumpkins are smaller and darker, while carving pumpkins tend to be larger and lighter colored. Carving pumpkins also have a larger surface space, making them ideal for drawing on designs and carving.
On the inside, pumpkin pie pumpkins have much thicker and better-tasting flesh and are much less stringy than carving pumpkins. Anyone familiar with pumpkin carving knows how much of a hassle it is to dig out all the stringy bits, but the large, delicious pumpkin seeds inside are always worth picking out for roasting. While it’s tempting to use a pumpkin pie pumpkin instead to avoid this digging, the thicker flesh would make carving harder in the long run, so the time spent digging out the guts pays off. So, what’s the verdict? Most would agree that carving pumpkins’ bitter flavor and thin flesh make them a poor choice for baking and cooking, but pumpkin pie pumpkins are too small and thick for carving. In the end, it’s best to stick to the pumpkin’s names as a guide.
