Regardless of which Mother’s location you shop at, Mother’s will continue to be here to serve your family’s health and wellness needs as we return to normal. We will continue to bring you the best seasonal, organic produce, the widest assortment of vitamins and supplements in Southern California, and the healthiest prepared foods. With the opening of Sunset Beach and soon after Corona del Mar, Mother’s is excited to provide more people with a place where healthy meets lifestyle. Cheers, Dorothy Carlow

What started as a small table grape farm has turned into so much more. In 1989, Don Enrique Camou, Carlos Bon Sr., and Alán Aguirre founded Viñedos Alta (now Grupo Alta), a table grape vineyard. Over time, Grupo Alta turned into one of the largest agricultural companies in Mexico and a pioneer in sustainability. Employee working conditions were also crucial to the company, and in 1995, it formed Alta Foundation, a non-profit that works to provide better working conditions for employees. A little over a decade later, Aguirre and Bon Jr. joined forces with Pedro Batiz to form Divine Flavor, which is now a branch of Grupo Alta. Divine Flavor is a family-run and grower-owned distribution company based in Nogales, Arizona, that believes in growing “Better Food for a Better World.” This summer, Divine Flavor is supplying Mother’s with beautiful USDA Certified Organic Seedless Watermelons! Perfect for slicing and eating out of hand, blending into a smoothie, or cubing into a salad, these watermelons are juicy, refreshing, and sweet. And with no seeds, the bright red pulp is easy to eat!
Established in 1969, Simoni & Massoni Farms grows and packs all of its produce in Brentwood, California, which is located in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay area. Founders Paul Simoni and Anthony Massoni pride themselves on producing high-quality, non-GMO vegetables in California, including super sweet white and yellow corn. The corn, known as Brentwood Super Sweet Corn, is specifically picked, packed, and shipped within hours to markets in California and across the United States. Simoni & Massoni Farms is providing Mother’s with their Non-GMO Brentwood Super Sweet Corn this summer. The season for this variety begins around the end of May or early June, and the harvest lasts through Labor Day Weekend, making it the perfect addition to a summer cookout.
Since 1998, Homegrown Organic Farms has been growing certified organic produce through its family farmers and family of companies. Through its Safe Food Pledge, Homegrown ensures that its farming practices consider worker safety, field cleanliness, and safe produce handling. The company also maintains organic integrity by verifying that all organic certifications are being met and maintaining proper documentation. Furthermore, through its Produce Traceability Initiative, Homegrown is able to trace all products sold. Founded on its pledge of stewardship, Homegrown’s Committed to Caring program showcases the company’s pride in building relationships with its customers, team, community, and most importantly, land. This season, Homegrown is supplying Mother’s with USDA Certified Organic Peaches. Picked at the absolute peak of flavor, these juicy and sweet peaches are rich in dietary fiber, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C.

Sometimes you want to try new beers without the dedication of having a whole bottle or can, or maybe you and your family aren’t able to go to a bar or restaurant yet. It’s just as easy to come down to your local Mother’s Market, pick out several new beers, and pour out a flight for each person to try out. Then, everyone can share their opinions of each beer and vote on which one is their favorite. Everyone gets to find a new potential favorite beer! If you’re having a hard time picking out beers for the tasting, here are some recommendations you’re bound to love.
Fort Point KSA Kolsch: This Kolsch uses three varieties of hops to create a bright, clean finish to the smooth, robust flavor of German malts. Fort Point Westfalia Red Ale: Fort Point’s Westfalia Red Ale uses creamy malts to bring a well rounded body and warm, caramel flavor to this beer. Fort Point Villager SF IPA: Villager uses Northwest hops to create a citrusy yet floral flavor profile. Bruery Goses Are Red: Goses are Red is a sharp, tart gose ale inspired by rosé wine. The combined flavors of grape, oak, and coriander bring this ale a fun and complex flavor profile. Offshoot Relax Hazy IPA: This IPA leans into citrusy hops for a lively, tropical flavor. Bruery Sticky Bun Barrel-Aged Stout: The perfect beer to end on, this stout is dessert in a glass. Bruery’s Sticky Bun Barrel Aged Imperial Stout dominates flavors of pecan, cinnamon, and maple syrup.

Summer entertaining HOW TO GRILL FRUIT The first step is choosing the best fruit to grill. You’ll want to go with large fruits cut into large pieces, like watermelon, pineapple, peaches, or bananas. If you go for bananas, keep them in the peel while they cook. You want to choose fruit that can retain its shape on the grill. But if you’re adventurous and want to grill berries, such as strawberries, grill them on skewers to avoid them falling through the grates. Next, choose a neutral oil, like grapeseed oil or unsalted butter. Doing so will prevent the fruits from sticking to the grates. Once the grill has preheated for 10 minutes, place your fruits down and leave them be over high heat for about 3 minutes or until you get the desired sear marks. Thicker fruits like peaches may need 5 minutes. You can even sprinkle your fruits with a dusting of sugar to get a caramelized crust, but be careful and watch for burnt sugar. It can take the flavor from caramel-y to ashy in the blink of an eye. Once you take the fruit off the grill, let it rest and pair it with desserts like cakes, ice cream, pies, or even cocktails. Or, if you’re getting creative, grilled fruits can complement meat and veggie dishes as well. The possibilities are endless! Try it at your next summer BBQ. Some of the best fruits come around in the summertime– watermelon, cherries, peaches, nectarines, strawberries, and so much more. Everyone loves them as is, but have you ever tried grilling them? Believe it or not, fruits taste amazing when grilled. The sweetness complements the smokiness of the grill perfectly, and you can do it at the same time you’re grilling other things for a convenient way to cook lunch or dinner and dessert at once. It may seem tricky at first, but give it a shot!
Summer grilling 5 MUST-KNOW TIPS When the weather gets hot, it’s time to fire up the grill. Cooking outdoors is a super fun way to enjoy some fresh air while making your favorite summertime cookout staples or trying out some interesting new grill recipes. Whether you’re an experienced griller or new to the craft, here are five useful tips to remember.
1. For larger foods, cooking over indirect heat for a more extended period is better, whereas it’s more beneficial to cook over direct heat for smaller pieces. 2. Try not to turn the food over too many times. Turning it once is best! Get a good amount of crispiness and color on one side to your liking before turning it to the other. 3. Don’t over-soak in your marinades! Marinating past 2 hours in an acidic marinade can result in a mushy texture. Marinade for less time on smaller items of food, as well. It’ll still soak up plenty of flavor! 2. Try not to turn the food over too many times. Turning it once is best! Get a good amount of crispiness and color on one side to your liking before turning it to the other. 4. Sauce at the last minute and let the meat rest. If you add sauce too early, the sugars will burn and ruin the good flavors. When you take the meat off the grill, it’ll be tempting to eat it right away, but wait about 30 minutes, and you won’t regret it! Letting the meat sit allows the cooking process to finish, and the juices can redistribute themselves for juicier, more flavorful food.

Summery watermelon cocktail
INGREDIENTS: • 1 small watermelon, de-seeded and chopped into chunks • 2 oz of vodka, or to taste (a lemon-flavored vodka works great too!) • 2-3 oz of club soda • 2 oz lime juice • Mint leaves DIRECTIONS: 1. Add the watermelon chunks to a blender and blend until smooth, then strain and set aside. 2. Add vodka, lime juice, and 1.5 cups of the watermelon juice together and mix. 3. Top off with the club soda and garnish with mint leaves. Enjoy!
Boba-shop inspired passionfruit mocktail
INGREDIENTS: • 1 tbsp passionfruit syrup (or 1.5 tbsp if you love a sweet drink) • ⅛ cup lemonade • 16 oz jasmine green tea, brewed • 1 mango, chopped • Optional: lychee jelly for topping DIRECTIONS: 1. Brew your green tea, then allow it to either cool in the fridge overnight or cool down with ice (if you’re going the ice route, brew it stronger since the ice will water down the flavor). 2. In a glass, add a few pieces of chopped mango and 1 tbsp lychee jelly if using. 3. Add your passionfruit syrup, some ice, and pour in the green tea. Stir well and enjoy!

Red, white & berry VEGAN FOURTH OF JULY CAKE A perfect festive dessert for the Fourth of July is the classic red, white, and blue cake using fresh strawberries, blueberries, and cream. A cake is a hit with anyone, it can feed a crowd, and it’s a great opportunity to have the kids help decorate with the berries. This recipe for a sweet coconut cake topped with coconut whipped cream and berries is vegan, too, so you can add a plant-based star to your menu!
INGREDIENTS: • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour • 1 ½ tsp baking soda • ½ tsp salt • 1 ½ cups white sugar • ¾ cup neutral oil • 1 ½ cups full-fat coconut milk • 2 tsp apple cider vinegar • 1 tsp coconut extract • 1 tsp vanilla extract • Shredded fine coconut • Vegan coconut whipped cream • Organic blueberries and raspberries DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. Grease a 9 x 13 sheet cake pan and flour it generously. Line the bottom with parchment paper. 3. Add all dry ingredients (flour, sugar, baking soda, salt) into a large bowl and mix. 4. Add in oil, coconut milk, apple cider vinegar, and coconut and vanilla extracts and mix into a batter, but do not over-mix. 5. Pour into the prepared cake pan and even out with a spatula or spoon. Tap pan against the counter to pop any air bubbles. 6. Bake for 32-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted into the center. 7. Allow to cool completely. 8. Cover the cake top with the vegan coconut whipped cream, sprinkle the coconut shreds over the top. 9. Decorate as desired with washed and dried organic blueberries and raspberries.

Cold sweet treat WATERMELON SHAVED ICE (BINGSU) RECIPE Watermelon season is finally here, and it’s the perfect time to try out some new icy desserts to beat the heat. If you’ve never tried Korean shaved ice (Bingsu), you’re in for a real treat. This delicious and easy-to-make dessert is perfect for eating alone or sharing with friends, and watermelon is the ideal ingredient to star in the show. INGREDIENTS: • 1 medium organic seedless watermelon • Ice cream of your choice (Vanilla or a fruit-flavored one is good. Even sorbet!) • Chocolate chips (optional) • 1 can sweetened condensed milk • Fruit syrup such as lemon, mango, or strawberry DIRECTIONS: 1. Cut the melon in half. Use a spoon or melon ball scoop to scoop out melon balls from 1 watermelon half. Then use a spoon to scrape out the remaining melon flesh (not too much, leave a bit of red in there for presentation) and scrape out the insides of the other half of the melon. 2. Set the melon balls aside in the fridge, then transfer scraped melon- including the water it drains- into a blender. Blend until smooth and then pour into a large storage bag. Place flat in the freezer. 3. Once it’s frozen, remove and crush it with your fists or a rolling pin. 4. Pour the watermelon ice back into the empty melon halves. 5. Top with a drizzle of sweetened condensed milk. 6. Place the melon balls on top and decorate with the chocolate chips like seeds, but leave a flat peak to place a scoop of your ice cream or sorbet. 7. Finally, add a little drizzle of your fruit syrup. Enjoy!
Keep the planet in mind SUSTAINABLE SUMMER BEACH DAYS As residents of Southern California, we are lucky enough to be blessed with beautiful weather and beautiful beaches. We can get out and enjoy the sun, sand, and sea almost any time we want! As we enter summer, you may be contemplating various ways to make your summer fun more sustainable and environmentally friendly. It’s easier than you think! Here are five easy tips on how to make your next beach day easier on the environment you’d like to enjoy. 1. Use a Hydro Flask for Water Everyone knows the merits of reusable bottles by now. Not only are plastic water bottles non-biodegradable and hard to recycle, but in hot weather and over time, the plastics may leak harmful chemicals into your drink. Plus, anyone who has tried to drink water that was sitting in a hot car knows how unrefreshing hot water is. With a Hydro Flask, you can keep your drink cold, chemical-free, and environmentally friendly! Mother’s has many Hydro Flasks to choose from. 2. Use Stasher Bags for Beach Snacks Disposable plastic bags are a thing we use all the time without thinking twice, but they really do add up. With Stasher bags, it’s easy to bring loose snacks from home to the beach without having to worry about your garbage buildup. Pick one (or a few) up during your next trip to Mother’s. 3. Walk or Bike to the Beach This one is pretty straightforward, but certainly not applicable to everyone. Southern California is very spread out, and it’s often tough to find public transportation that gets you where you need to go. So if you can’t walk or bike to the beach, you may try carpooling with friends or family or driving to a walkable/bikeable distance! You’ll have a better chance of finding parking that way, anyways.
4. Carry Everything in Your Mother’s Reusable Bag Mother’s Market reusable bags aren’t just great for your grocery trips. You can easily use them as beach-ready totes as well. There’s enough space to fit your snacks, sunscreen, and towel. Speaking of sunscreen… 5. Use an Eco-friendly Sunscreen Did you know that many common sunscreens can wash off harmful chemicals into the ocean or the sand you come into contact with? These chemicals can be harmful to marine life and damage already struggling coral reefs. Using a non-toxic, eco-friendly sunscreen not only protects your skin from harmful UV rays but also protects our precious beaches.
Get sunshine ready WHY USE A BROAD SPECTRUM SUNSCREEN? With the arrival of summer, many of us are spending more time outdoors soaking in the sunshine. While getting a little Vitamin D is good, spending time outside without sunscreen is bad for your skin. And even if you are using sunscreen, you may still be harming your skin if the sunscreen is not broad spectrum! What is Broad Spectrum Sunscreen? While many people look for a sunscreen that is water resistant and has a specific SPF value, it’s important to also look for one that’s broad spectrum! So what exactly does that mean? Broad spectrum sunscreens are those that work to block both UVA and UVB rays. Find a Sunscreen That’s Right for You Why Use a Broad Spectrum Sunscreen? UVA rays can lead to skin aging, sun spots, wrinkles, and even skin cancer. On the other hand, UVB rays can cause an immediate burn and reddening of the skin. While UVB rays do not reach as far when it’s cloudy outside, UVA rays have a longer range and can penetrate clouds and glass. The bottom line? Choose a sunscreen that protects from both! Mother’s has many broad spectrum sunscreens to choose from that are all clean and cruelty-free. Whether you want something for your face, your body, or your little ones, we have an option for you.

Hydration 101 ALL ABOUT ELECTROLYTES What are Electrolytes? Chances are, if you have ever had a sports drink, you’ve at least heard of electrolytes. But ever wonder what they actually are and why they are good for you? Electrolytes are minerals that carry electrical charges. When distributed in your body through fluid, they use their electrical energy to help the body maintain proper function, including controlling fluid balance, regulating blood pressure, and maintaining your blood’s pH. Why are Electrolytes So Important? As we sweat while working out, we lose water and electrolytes, which we need to replace to maintain proper body functions. Dehydration can decrease athletic performance and impact your cognitive abilities. While electrolyte-enhanced water is not superior to regular water, it may be beneficial in situations in which you are quickly losing water and minerals. These situations can include when you are exercising, being exposed to heat for extended periods, or dealing with an illness such as vomiting or diarrhea. Liquid I.V. Using cellular transport technology (CTT), Liquid IV contains a specific potassium, sodium, and glucose ratio that brings hydration into the bloodstream faster and more efficiently than water alone. One stick of Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier can provide the same hydration as drinking two to three bottles of water alone. Electrolyte-Enhanced Water Ultima Replenisher Packed with six electrolytes and no junk, sugar, calories, or carbs, Ultima Replenisher is an advanced, balanced electrolyte drink that provides highly effective hydration. It also tastes great and is sweetened only with organic Stevia leaf. Nuun Optimized with electrolytes for those living an active lifestyle, Nuun drink tablets, when combined with water, provide healthy hydration without the carbohydrates. Electrolyte Facts Sodium (Na) maintains fluid balance Potassium (K) prevents cramping Magnesium (Mg) relaxes muscles Bicarbonates may delay fatigue and enhance endurance
Prepare and recover THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRE-WORKOUT AND PROTEIN POWDERS As the world’s greatest athletes gather to compete this summer, you may feel inspired to work out more, especially if you’re looking to shed a few pounds you gained during quarantine. As you work out more, you likely will want to start using a protein powder and possibly even a pre-workout supplement. Curious what the difference is? Let’s break it down! Pre-Workout v. Protein Powders
A pre-workout supplement, commonly referred to as simply a “pre-workout,” is usually a powder drink mix designed to improve workout performance when ingested before working out. While every pre-workout is different, typically, such a product is formulated to boost energy by including ingredients such as carbohydrates and caffeine. On the other hand, protein powders are nutritional supplements that can help build muscle and repair the body’s tissue, among other things. Protein is essential for the body’s bone, skin, and muscle as it helps produce enzymes, hormones, and more. Our Wellness Experts suggest trying out the following protein powders and pre-workout supplements if you’re not sure where to start.
PRE-WORKOUT MRM Driven Pre-Workout • Driven contains three specific blends designed to help individuals promote muscle power and stamina during workouts • Sharpens mental focus and clarity • Vegan • Contains adaptogens to support recovery PRE-WORKOUT Vega Sport Energizer • 100 MG of caffeine derived from coffee berry and green tea extract • 16 grams of carbs • Contains electrolytes and B12 • Helps with staying alert and focused while working out
PROTEIN POWDERS Garden of Life Grass-Fed Whey Sport Protein • 24 grams of grass-fed whey protein • 6 grams of BCAA’s – BCAA’s help reduce the recovery time of the muscles • 2 grams of probiotics • Beneficial for refueling and repairing muscles after a workout. Vega Sport Protein • 30 grams of plant protein per serving • 5 grams of BCAA’s – BCAA’s help reduce the recovery time of the muscles • Vegetarian • Beneficial for refueling and repairing muscles after a workout

It’s finally time to get outdoors and enjoy the sun, water, and breeze! Despite all the benefits of getting outside, those three things can do a lot of harm to your skin. The aging and damaging effects of UV rays combined with the drying effects of wind and salt water, or even chlorinated water, can take a hit to your skin’s wellness and vitality. Your skin is the largest organ and is the absorbent gateway to the rest of your body, so keeping it strong and protected is the best gift you can give yourself this summer. Here is a lineup of five amazing products you can use together to keep your skin glowing and protected. Step 1 – Cocokind Organic Facial Cleansing Oil Everyone needs a solid cleanser. The avocado oil in this cleanser can fight free radicals, increase elasticity, and help reduce fine lines and wrinkles. A great beginning step to your skin routine! Step 2 – Derma E Vitamin C Serum Have you tried incorporating a serum into your skincare routine? Serums help add in a little more power to keeping your skin nourished. This Vitamin C serum helps fight free radicals, smooth skin, even skin tone, and improve hydration. But like all Vitamin C serums, be sure to store it in a cool, dark place, like your fridge. You’ll appreciate how cold it is on a hot day as a bonus. Step 3 – Andalou Plant–Based Retinol Cream Anyone concerned about aging skin can benefit from a good retinol cream. This cream helps fight wrinkles, sagging, and dark spots with added support from CQ10, which soothes skin and allows it to retain moisture. Step 4 – Mad Hippie Eye Cream With white tea extract as its star ingredient, this eye cream helps relieve puffy eyes and reduce dark circles. The eyes are a much-neglected part of our skincare routine, but they need some love too! Step 5 – Andalou Brightening Tinted SPF And finally, the most important skincare step: your sunscreen. Far too many people forget to use it or think they don’t need to. Even if it’s cloudy and even if you’re spending most of your time indoors, you are still being exposed to harmful UV rays. So don’t forget your sunscreen, and try out this one which will fit in perfectly with the rest of your routine.
Take it easy 7 WAYS TO RELAX THIS LABOR DAY
Many people use Labor Day weekend as an opportunity to have a get-together or travel, but this year may be a great time to instead use that break to take care of yourself and relax for a while! Our day-to-day lives are usually over-scheduled, leaving little room for us to take a moment to breathe and rest our minds without the obligation of performing, well, labor. So this Labor Day, here are a few ways to relax and permit yourself to not feel guilty about it! 1. Order Your Groceries Through Instacart Putting up with traffic and shopping for groceries can be a drag when all you want to do is rest. Using a shopping app such as Instacart gives you time to stay home in your pajamas while ensuring you have food for the week. Mother’s partners with Instacart to bring you both pickup and delivery options! 2. Use Some CBD CBD is perfect for those of us that need a little help encouraging the brain to slow down. It can be easy to let racing thoughts get in the way of our relaxation time, but CBD can help take the edge off in a non-intoxicating way. 3. Take Time to Put on Your Favorite Comfy Outfit If you’re going to lounge around, do it to the fullest. Break out your favorite socks, robe, pajamas, hoodie, or anything you know will make you feel your best. 4. Try Some Yoga YouTube is full of great guided meditations and yoga sessions, both short and long, and friendly to beginners and experienced practitioners. Your muscles and mind may be tired from the stress of your workweek, so get stretching and breathing! 5. Dabble in Some Aromatherapy Whether using an essential oil diffuser, incense, wax melts, or candles, your favorite scents are an ideal way to get your mind in a good place. Scents like lavender or warm amber can be particularly relaxing. 6. Take a Walk A little exercise in the fresh air outdoors is a good idea, especially if you do so before relaxing. Taking in the natural sounds and sights around you can set you up for a remarkably peaceful day. 7. Meal Prep for the Week Some people may find meal prepping to be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be! Depending on what you’re making, meal prepping and cooking can be very meditative and give you a chance to take the stress of weeknight cooking off your shoulders. This way, you can spread the relaxing vibes out over your whole week. Put on your favorite tunes and get cooking!
